It is the tenth day of the month of Ashwin (as per the Indian calendar). The sun has already risen, is intensely radiant in the sky, and giving an impression that it would never set again, And why should it? Today, Emperor Bharata is about to begin a journey to conquer the Shata khanda (six continents). However, before setting out, he visited his mother, Nanda (Yashaswati), at her palace and sought her permission to embark on the victorious journey.
The attendants are reciting hymns praising him. After laying down a gift for his mother, who was seated amidst other women, Emperor Bharata, the possessor of an unblemished character and looking as resplendent as Lord Indra, bowed down and paid his respects to her.
At that moment, mother Yashaswati gazed at her son like a bird would peer at the moon, hoping to attain coolness. Elated to see her majestic and brave son, she enquired about the reason for his visit. He informed her about the manifestation of Sudarshan chakra, and being an auspicious day (the tenth day of the month), he sought her permission to embark on a journey to conquer the world. Hearing this filled her with pride, and her eyes brimmed with joyful tears. She embraced her son and showered him with blessings and words of good fortune.
She said, "Bharata, you are an emperor, the descendant of Lord Rishabhdev, a great hero. You enhance the dignity and prestige of the lineage of Ikshvaku. Go, my son, proceed! The world awaits your victory. You are its ruler, and the entire world belongs to you. None other than you is capable of conquering it."
Touched by his mother's words, Emperor Bharata's heart swelled with honor and respect. With a joyful smile, he playfully inquired, "Mother, do you truly believe that I possess the wisdom and strength to conquer the six continents?"
Mother Yashaswati immediately responded with pride. "Oh, my son! Within you flows the blood of King Nabhirai - the 14th progenitor, and Lord Rishabhdev - the first Tirthankara of this era. You are the repository of their skills and abilities. No one on this Earth is more capable than you are. Proceed, my son! I have complete faith in you. You will return after conquering the world."
After hearing his mother's resolute words, He reverently touched her feet and prepared himself for the journey ahead.
दिग्विजय हेतु माता से आज्ञा – अश्विन माह की दशमी का दिन है और आकाश में सूर्य उदित हो चुका है, अत्यन्त प्रकाशमान यह सूर्य ऐसा प्रतीत हो रहा है कि यह सूर्य अब कभी अस्त ही नही होगा और हो भी क्यों ना? आज सम्राट भरत षट खण्ड की विजय यात्रा पर जो निकलने वाले हैं परन्तु उससे पूर्व वे अपनी माता नन्दा (यशस्वती) से दिग्विजय प्रयाण की आज्ञा लेने उनके महल में पधारे हैं। सभी दासियाँ उनके गुणगान में स्तुति पाठ कर रही हैं और अनेकों स्त्रियों के मध्य इन्द्र के समान सुशोभित अकलंक चारित्र के धारी सम्राट भरत ने माता के चरणों में भेंट रखकर उन्हें प्रणाम किया। उस क्षण माता अपने चक्रवर्ती पुत्र को उस प्रकार निहार रही हैं जैसे शीतलता की आश में पक्षी चन्द्रमा को। सर्वांग सुन्दर एवं अत्यन्त बलशाली अपने पुत्र को देख माँ का रोम-रोम हर्षित हो उठता है, वे भरत से यहाँ आने का कारण पूछती है तो वे बताते हैं कि उन्हें चक्ररत्न की प्राप्त हुई है और आज दशमी के शुभ अवसर पर वे दिग्विजय हेतु प्रयाण करना चाहते हैं अतः माता की आज्ञा पाने हेतु आये हैं। यह जानकर कि उनका पुत्र अब दिग्विजय हेतु प्रयाण कर रहा है, माता के आँखों से आनन्द की अश्रुधारा बहने लगी, वे गर्व से प्रफ़ुल्लित हो गयी और अपने बेटे को गले से लगाकर आशीर्वाद और मंगल वचनों की वर्षा करने लगी। वे बोली “भरत! तुम सम्राट हो, तुम्हारे पिता ऋषभदेव प्रजा के नायक थे, उनके ही तुम वंशज हो, तुमसे ही इक्ष्वाकु वंश की मर्यादा है, मान-सम्मान है, जाओ पुत्र, जाओ। यह दिग्विजय तुम्हारी प्रतिक्षा कर रही है। यह सम्पूर्ण वसुधा तुम्हारी है, तुम ही इसके अधिपति हो, तुम्हारे सिवा इस विश्व में कोई भी इसे जीतने में समर्थ नही” । माता के ये वचन सुनकर सम्राट भरत का हृदय गर्व और सम्मान से भर उठा, वे आनन्दित होकर माता से उपहास करते हुए पूछते हैं कि “माँ क्या आपको विश्वास है कि मैं इतना बुद्धिमान और समर्थ हूँ कि षटखण्ड को जीत सकूँ?”, तब माता यशस्वती तत्क्षण अभिमान से भरकर बोलती हैं कि हे पुत्र! तुम्हारे भीतर चौदहवे कुलकर महाराज नाभिराय एवं इस युग के आदि तीर्थंकर ऋषभदेव का रक्त है, उनकी सामर्थ्य और कुशलता के तुम पुंज हो, तुम्हारे जितना सामर्थ्यवान इस धरती पर कोई दूसरा नही, जाओ पुत्र! मुझे तुम पर पूर्ण विश्वास है, तुम विजयी होकर ही लौटोगे” । माता के इतने दृढ वचन सुनकर भरतेश ने उनके चरण स्पर्श किये और वे दिग्विजय हेतु सज्ज हुए।
