After his father’s initiation into monkhood, King Bharata considered the entire earth his family and ruled accordingly. The citizens often discussed among themselves that Emperor Bharata was courageous and fair. Some would even question whether he was brave since he did not engage in wars, and stories about his victories were unheard of. In response, wise citizens would point out that a true hero isn't someone who excels in warfare and bloodshed but is revered by the entire population, friends and foes alike. Hence, our emperor Bharata is indeed a true hero. The Earth and its subjects flourished through his benevolence, with a just and gentle demeanor similar to Emperor Rishabhdev.
The fame of King Bharata was spreading far and wide. On the other hand, monk Rishabhdev was on the verge of attaining Kevalagyana (Omniscience) after an austere penance spanning a thousand years. One day, when the emperor was in a conference in his royal court, a messenger arrived at the royal court chanting glory for the lord Adinath. He informed, “Monk Adinath has attained Kevalagyan in the shakata garden." Hearing this news, the emperor could not contain the resulting joy in his heart. Rising from his throne, he took four steps forward and saluted Lord Adinath (in absentia). Giddy with joy, he was about to give a jeweled necklace to the messenger when another messenger entered the room. He announced, "A Sudarshan chakra has manifested in the Ayudhshala (armory) capable of conquering the entire world and spreading Emperor Bharata's fame and glory globally." Filled with wonder and pride, the court chanted glory for the emperor. Overwhelmed with joy, the emperor could also feel the glory and weight of responsibilities associated with being an emperor. Amidst congratulatory messages, another messenger arrived with good news, “My king, you have been blessed with a son.” Hearing these three auspicious messages one after another, all the citizens of Ayodhya were elated. Emperor Bharata also became extremely happy and showered Kimicchaka dana (voluntary donations). In this way, hope for a brighter future infused the whole earth.
त्रिरत्नों की प्राप्ति – पिता के दीक्षा लेने के पश्चात राजा भरत ने मानो सम्पूर्ण पृथ्वी को ही अपना परिवार मान लिया हो, इसप्रकार शासन किया। प्रजाजन भी परस्पर चर्चा-वार्ता किया करते कि सम्राट भरत तो वास्तव में अत्यन्त पराक्रमी और न्यायवान राजा हैं, कोई आशंका भी करते कि सम्राट पराक्रमी कैसे हैं? क्योंकि वे ना तो युद्ध पर जाते हैं, ना उनके विजय के समाचार हमने आज तक सुने हैं! तो ज्ञानी प्रजाजन ही समाधान देती कि भाई! पराक्रमी वो नहीं जो युद्ध करे और जनहत्या में निमित्त हो, सच्चा पराक्रमी तो वो है जिसके समक्ष स्वयं ही सारी प्रजा और मित्र-शत्रु वंदन करे। इसीलिये हमारे सम्राट सही अर्थों में पराक्रमी हैं। जिनके आश्रय से समस्त पृथ्वी और प्रजा सुखी रहे, ऐसे हैं हमारे सम्राट भरत। राजा भरत की कीर्ति दिग-दिगान्तरों में फैलती जा रही थी और दूसरी ओर मुनिराज ऋषभदेव सहस्त्र वर्ष की कठिन तपस्या के बाद केवलज्ञान प्राप्ति की ओर उन्मुख थे और एक दिन जब सम्राट अपनी राजसभा में बैठे मन्त्रणा कर रहे थे कि तभी एक राजदूत राजसभा में भगवान आदिनाथ की जय-जयकार करता हुआ प्रवेश करता है और सम्राट भरत को “मुनिराज आदिनाथ को शकट नामक उद्यान में केवलज्ञान की प्राप्ति हो गयी है।” ऐसा संदेश देता है। यह समाचार सुनकर सम्राट अपने हृदय के हर्ष को समेट ना पाये, उन्होंने अपने सिंहासन से उठकर चार कदम आगे बढकर भगवान को नमस्कार किया। वे गदगद होकर अपनी रत्नमालायें उस दूत को देने ही लगे थे कि तभी दूसरा राजदूत सभा में प्रवेश करता है और समाचार देता है कि “आयुधशाला में सम्राट भरत के यश और कीर्ति को सम्पूर्ण भू-मण्डल में पहुँचाने वाला और समस्त पृथ्वी को जीतने वाला सुदर्शन चक्र प्रगट हुआ है।” समस्त राजसभा यह समाचार सुनकर आश्चर्य और गौरव से भर उठी और चक्रवर्ती सम्राट की जय-जयकार करने लगी। सम्राट के हर्ष का पार ना रहा, वे चक्रवर्ती पद के गौरव और उसके दायित्व के भार को अनुभव कर पा रहे थे, कि तभी बधाइयों के उस शोर में एक और शुभ समाचार लेकर दूत आया और बोला कि हे महाराज! अन्तःपुर में आपको पुत्ररत्न की प्राप्ति हुई है। एक साथ तीन-तीन शुभ समाचार सुनकर सारी अयोध्या धन्य हुई, भरत ने भी अपार हर्षित होकर प्रजा में किमिच्छिक दान दिया और इस प्रकार सारी वसुधा आने वाले उत्तम भविष्य की आशाओं में मग्न हो गयी।
